Catalan language teaching has undergone a significant transformation over the years, both in student profiles and pedagogical techniques. A teacher with 23 years of experience at the Consorci's headquarters in Ciutat Vella de Barcelona highlights that the student body has evolved with migratory waves, but maintains a constant: a strong motivation to learn the language and integrate into Catalonia.
“"They don't just want to learn the language, they also want to integrate into Catalonia."
Another teacher, with seven months of experience, points out the challenge of finding balance in the classroom, as students have diverse motivations. Some need certificates for professional reasons, while others approach Catalan out of cultural interest.
“"Some people risk their lives studying Catalan, because they need the certificates. In contrast, others study it for love of culture."
Teaching methodology has also changed. While the main goal remains for newcomers to speak Catalan, the approach has shifted from a more grammatical and book-based focus to a more dynamic and conversational model. Teachers seek to encourage active use of the language, even introducing dialectal variations that surprise students.
Despite the vocational nature of being a Catalan teacher, there is a shortage of new professionals studying Catalan Philology for this purpose. Current educators emphasize the importance of their work for the vitality of the language.
“"Catalan must be saved, and saving it means people speak it."
