Minister Sílvia Paneque visited the Besòs Water Treatment Plant in Barcelona this Saturday to monitor expansion works designed to boost the region's water security.

The 51 million euro project will increase the facility's capacity from 200 liters per second to 800 liters by the end of the year, eventually reaching one cubic meter per second by 2026. This marks the first time surface water from the Besòs river will be treated for drinking using advanced reverse osmosis technology.

"This action is the first step to materialize and consolidate the strategy for water transition, increasing water availability without depending on rain."

The Government aims to meet 70% of urban water demand through desalination and regeneration by 2030. Similar projects have already been completed in the Alt Empordà region, including new wells in Peralada and upgrades to the Empuriabrava treatment plant.
