The Mayor of Barcelona, Jaume Collboni, has emphasized the need for the European Union to become a fundamental tool to ensure affordable housing and the right of citizens to remain in their localities.

This statement was made during his intervention at the European Pulse Forum, organized by Politico. Collboni stressed that, just as the EU has been crucial in guaranteeing peace, democracy, and freedom of movement, it must now address the issue of housing in the face of speculation that displaces residents.

"Many things have been done to guarantee the right to move freely around Europe, but what about the right to stay where you live?"

The Barcelona mayor warned that these speculative practices not only endanger social cohesion but also undermine democratic legitimacy. Furthermore, he defended the importance of creating opportunities in large urban centers.
Collboni highlighted Barcelona's leadership role internationally and within the EU, reinforced by the recent opening of the city's office in Brussels. He affirmed that the Catalan capital has a plan to continue being the voice of European cities.
Finally, the mayor announced that Barcelona will be the epicenter of global progressivism next week with the celebration of the Global Progressive Mobilisation, a gathering of progressive parties and organizations promoted by socialists. He concluded that Barcelona is a beacon of values such as democracy, tolerance, and freedom, citing the city's support for Palestine and Ukraine as examples.
