The green space on Encarnació street is at the center of a dispute following a participatory budget proposal. The 500,000 euro project aims to adapt the area for children's use, a plan that received 1,173 votes through the decidim.barcelona platform.
The Salvem el Jardí 2014 entity, which has managed the site for twelve years, strongly opposes the municipal plan. Volunteers fear that adding a playground and multipurpose area will destroy the garden's essence and threaten cacti that are over 40 years old.
“"If conditions change significantly, this will no longer be the Jardí del Silenci; it will be a children's playground."
Meanwhile, the Teixidores AFA argues the project is respectful and will improve the space for the entire neighborhood. The city council has indicated that the renewal of the management agreement may depend on the acceptance of these changes.
