Public school teachers who join the strike days called by the education sector in Catalonia face a significant reduction in their income. According to estimates based on current salary scales, each day not worked could result in a loss exceeding 115 euros gross per teacher.
Those who participate in all the strike calls could accumulate up to five fewer working days. This translates into a total loss that could range between 450 and 600 euros gross, or even more, depending on each professional's specific salary conditions.
Exercising the right to strike in the public sector involves the full loss of the base salary for each day not worked. Additionally, there is a proportional deduction from weekly rest periods and extraordinary payments.
Barcelona and the Barcelonès region experienced one of their territorialized strike days on Monday, as part of the protest cycle taking place in different regions of Catalonia until the end of the academic year. Affected teachers are still unaware of the exact details of how these deductions will be made on their May and June paychecks.
The exact amount each teacher might lose varies considerably. Factors such as job category, whether they are permanent or temporary staff, seniority, and salary supplements all influence the final calculation. Salary data from the Generalitat de Catalunya indicates that the average gross annual salary for a primary school teacher is around 31,000 euros, while for a secondary and high school teacher it rises to about 35,000 euros.
Thus, estimates suggest that each strike day could cost from about 90 euros gross (approximately 75 net) for A2 group primary teachers without supplements, to 115 euros gross (around 95 net) or more for secondary and high school teachers.
