Barcelona-El Prat Airport has recorded a historic July, surpassing 5.8 million passengers. This figure represents a 6% increase compared to the same month in 2025. The rise is not merely seasonal, as in the January-July period, the airport has welcomed over 34 million users, a 4.6% increase from the first seven months of 2025.
This growth exceeds the average for the Aena network in Spain, which stands at 4%. The data confirms continuous activity at the El Prat terminals, anticipating that the theoretical annual capacity limit of 55 million travelers will be surpassed again this year. This situation occurs while the infrastructure's rehabilitation and expansion process awaits.
Of the total 5,862,148 travelers in July, over 4.5 million flew on international routes, a 7.6% increase from the previous year. Domestic flights registered 1.3 million passengers, with a more modest increase of 0.6%. Aena advocates for the need to expand the facilities to strengthen long-haul international connections from Barcelona.
The Barcelona Air Route Development Committee (CDRA), comprising the Generalitat, the Barcelona City Council, the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce, and Aena, has highlighted the improved connectivity with Asia, featuring direct flights to cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Seoul. Nevertheless, a growth potential of an additional 1.8 million annual passengers to Asian markets without direct connections is estimated.
The airport's expansion is generating controversy due to its environmental impact, including a potential effect on the Ricarda lagoon from the lengthening of a flight runway. Year-to-date, 25.8 million passengers have flown abroad, a 5.7% increase from last year, primarily to European countries. The pending challenge is to increase long-haul international traffic.
Compared to other airports in the Aena network, Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport led passenger volume in July with nearly 6.5 million (6% more). Palma de Mallorca followed with 4.7 million (2.2% more). The largest increases were recorded in Alicante and Valencia, each with 11%.
