A large eight-meter sinkhole in Barcelona's El Putxet neighborhood, caused by tunnel boring operations, has led to the evacuation of nearly a hundred homes. Meanwhile, Catalonia is facing multiple forest fires and controversial judicial decisions.

The city of Barcelona is experiencing tense moments following a significant sinkhole in the Sant Gervasi-la Bonanova neighborhood, near the El Putxet FGC station. The eight-meter diameter hole has led to the precautionary evacuation of nearly a hundred homes after it opened up in the bathroom of a pizzeria. Tunnel boring works are identified as the main cause of this incident, recalling the Carmel tragedy. According to reports, a resident had previously alerted Territori about possible cracks in the building.
The Generalitat Firefighters had to tackle a critical day with up to seven significant fires spread across Catalonia. Adverse weather conditions, with extreme temperatures, have worsened the situation, turning the countryside into a "tinderbox." Fires in Sentmenat, Savallà del Comtat, Selvanera, and Torrefeta i Florejacs have forced the confinement of populations and caused significant damage, including the death of a farm with 800 pigs in Torrefeta. A fire near the train tracks forced the closure of the R4 Rodalies line between Martorell Central and Sant Sadurní d’Anoia.
In the judicial sphere, controversial decisions are emerging. The State is demanding that some victims of the 2017 Barcelona and Cambrils attacks pay the judicial costs for appeals filed with the Supreme Court. Among those affected are the parents of a child killed on La Rambla and a Mossos d’Esquadra officer who shot down terrorists. The amount claimed amounts to 2,726 euros.
In parallel, the Barcelona Court has reopened the case against three mossos d'esquadra investigated for allegedly helping Carles Puigdemont to flee in 2024. The chamber believes there are sufficient grounds to take the case to trial, contradicting the previous decision to dismiss it. The officers are accused of a possible omission of the duty to pursue crimes.
In the economic sphere, the audiovisual production company Mediapro has recorded its largest historical losses, exceeding 286 million euros in 2025. These red figures are due, in part, to the provisioning of failed projects promoted during the last term of former president Tatxo Benet, who recently left the company.
