This concerns the eviction of a resident with three minor children from number 60, Buenos Aires street, which took place on May 20th. According to municipal sources, the procedure is initiated under Law 24/2015, which obliges large property holders to offer social rent to individuals without resources.
The processing of this procedure could result in a financial penalty ranging from 9,001 to 90,000 euros. The Housing Commissioner, Joan Ramon Riera, stated that the council “must enforce the law, yes or yes, and therefore, the relevant investigations must be opened ex officio based on information gathered by municipal services”.
Riera emphasized the council's commitment to the right to housing and to ensuring that large property holders and some investment funds fulfill their responsibilities regarding their properties and tenants. He guaranteed that efforts are being made so that “more and more homes end up in the residential market” and warned that “economic exploitation of housing is not welcome in Barcelona”.
