The false threat, which forced the activation of the crisis committee at Barcelona-El Prat airport, is being investigated as a possible manipulation of the aircraft's Wi-Fi network. Authorities believe the action could provisionally fall under Article 561 of the Penal Code, which punishes the deliberate creation of situations of serious risk to collective security.
The penalties provided for this type of crime, especially when affecting critical infrastructure such as air transport, can lead to between three months and one year in prison, in addition to potential civil liability for the costs derived from the emergency operation. The investigation suggests that the perpetrator accessed the onboard connectivity system to modify the network name.
I HAVE A BOMB. EVERYONE WILL DIE
This modification was detected when Turkish Airlines flight TK1853, carrying 162 passengers and crew, was flying over La Cerdanya. The crew immediately alerted authorities using code 7700, activating security protocols. The aircraft was escorted by two fighter jets until its emergency landing on an isolated runway at El Prat.
Once on the ground, the Guardia Civil took charge of the investigation, supported by the National Police, Mossos d'Esquadra, and the Explosives Disposal Group (GEDEX). After a thorough inspection, no explosive device was found. Turkish Airlines has announced that it will take legal action against the passenger responsible for the false alarm, as confirmed by Senior Vice President of Communications, Yahya Ustun.
