The Barcelona City Council's Government Commission has given final approval to the Vallcarca Central Park project, with construction starting by year-end and transforming the neighborhood with 10,000 m² of green space.

Barcelona City Council has given the final green light to the Vallcarca Central Park project, an initiative that promises to become a new “green lung” for the neighborhood. Construction is scheduled to begin by the end of this year and last approximately 18 months. This approval marks a significant step in the area's transformation, moving the neighborhood out of the provisional state it had been in for years.
The deputy mayor and councilor for the Gràcia district, Laia Bonet, highlighted the importance of this project, which resulted from a participatory process with residents. The park will gain 10,000 square meters of green space, including urban gardens, accessible pathways, relaxation and play areas, and new vegetation. Previously, in July of last year, construction began on a new street basketball area, which is expected to be completed soon.
The park's design is divided into two main areas. The first, more urban and closer to buildings, features controlled topography. The second, more naturalized area, will utilize the terrain's slope through terraces. These terraces will be connected by ramps and stairs and will include urban gardens and a picnic area. The project will also improve accessible connections, creating a main pathway linking Vallcarca Avenue with Gustavo Bécquer Street, connecting to the Maria Baldó gardens.
The plaza area, more open, will feature children's play equipment, vegetation, and spaces for socialization and open-air community activities. The park construction and the future renovation of Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer and Cambrils streets (in a second phase) have a budget of 8.9 million euros, with construction expected to start in December 2026 and finish in December 2027.
This renovation is part of the Vallcarca transformation, which includes the construction of two new affordable housing developments (20 and 27 apartments each) on the plots at Farigola 10-12 and Mare de Déu del Coll, 101-109. Additionally, 36 affordable rental housing units from the Grèvol development are being allocated, expected to be delivered by the end of the year, with units reserved for specific groups such as people with reduced mobility, young people under 35, single-parent families, and neighborhood residents.
