The educational project The Freedom Suitcases, promoted by the Memorial Democràtic, will reach ESO and baccalaureate centers in the 2026-2027 academic year to raise awareness among young people about anti-Franco resistance through historical objects and documents.
This initiative, a result of the collaboration between the Memorial Democràtic, the Department of Education and Vocational Training, and the Specific Pedagogical Resource Center for Innovation and Educational Research (CESIRE), seeks to offer a critical and experiential exploration of the various struggles against the dictatorship and their relevance in democratic memory.
The project is materialized in six thematic suitcases, each dedicated to one of the main social struggles of Catalan anti-Francoism: student, worker, feminist and LGBTIQ+, neighborhood, peasant, and cultural. Each suitcase contains a selection of objects, documents, images, audiovisual materials, and songs, designed to provide an interactive and concrete approach to historical events.
“
"What we want is that, as students today are very accustomed to virtual language, bringing physical, tangible objects can be another way of learning, of reaching the past and history."
The suitcases are designed to encourage group work, both inside and outside the classroom, promoting reflection on the meaning of anti-Francoism. According to Jordi Font Agulló, director of the Memorial Democràtic,
“
"bringing anti-Francoism into the classroom is fundamental to educating critical citizens committed to democracy. This resource facilitates a unique educational experience that combines history, culture, and reflection."
