A Chechen national, sought by Russian authorities for an alleged homicide committed 20 years ago, has been arrested at a hotel in Barcelona's Sant Martí district.

The arrest occurred shortly before 1 p.m. this Wednesday, June 10, as part of the security operation 'Albus', deployed to protect the visit of Pope Leo XIV to the city. The detainee also faces charges of illegal possession of weapons and explosives, and violent robbery.
According to police sources, the individual had an international arrest warrant issued by Russian authorities. The arrest was carried out by public order units of the Mossos d'Esquadra, who mobilized 5,600 officers for the special operation.
This Wednesday, Barcelona experienced a turbulent day with a new firearm execution on Balmes street. The Chechen fugitive's arrest occurs amidst a climate of heightened alert in the city, which was heavily secured for the papal visit.
As part of the same 'Albus' security plan, the Mossos d'Esquadra also arrested four other individuals. Two are accused of alleged sexual assaults involving inappropriate touching near the Sagrada Família, and the other two had active judicial arrest warrants.
