The Generalitat has announced the implementation of a digital twin, a virtual representation of the road network that will allow managers to make real-time decisions and help drivers choose the best routes. This new technological tool will be integrated into the AMB's road network within three years, covering 326 kilometers and managing the more than 800,000 vehicles that circulate daily.
The tool will be fed by classic information collection systems, such as counters and cameras, combined with simulation models and the advances of artificial intelligence (AI) and big data. It will integrate all information into a single system, cross-referencing real-time monitored data with historical records.
The objective is to improve infrastructure management and planning, control traffic, and reduce accidents. The Minister of Territory, Sílvia Paneque, has argued that the digital twin will not only have a reactive role but will also serve to forecast incidents, reduce emissions, improve response to accidents, and optimize road network maintenance.
The technicians' plan includes extending this system to all Catalan roads in the future. To achieve these goals, the government has a budget of 7.1 million euros, 40% of which comes from European Regional Development Funds (ERDF).
This measure is in addition to the program approved by the Generalitat to promote connected and intelligent roads, and it is expected to help achieve the objective of reducing road fatalities by 50% compared to 2020.
