The European Commission has awarded the renewal of the HR Excellence in Research (HRS4R) seal to the Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBELL). This distinction certifies the application of the principles of the European Charter for Researchers and the promotion of excellent working environments for research staff. The evaluation highlights the integration of HRS4R principles within the institution's governance structure.
According to Lola Ruiz, Head of Human Resources at IDIBELL, "The renewal of this seal confirms that at IDIBELL, people management is not just another administrative process; it is one of the pillars supporting the excellence of our scientific output, with transparency, equity, diversity, and expert knowledge inside and outside the laboratory as essential elements."
The renewal recognizes IDIBELL's advancements in open, transparent, and merit-based recruitment, professional development, equal opportunities, and improvement of working conditions. European evaluators emphasize that the HRS4R strategy is fully integrated into the institution's strategic plan and has the direct involvement of management.
The European audit positively assesses the robustness of IDIBELL's people ecosystem management model, highlighting the integration of the HRS4R strategy into the management structure and the creation of a specific Talent Unit. 152 job offers have been published on EURAXESS since late 2022, applying transparency and merit criteria in recruitment.
The report also acknowledges efforts in training and professional development, with over 1,500 participants in the Areté program since 2022. Initiatives such as the International PhD Training Program and onboarding programs reinforce research careers. Equality and diversity policies are highlighted, including the specific LGTBIQ+ plan and protocols against harassment.
As of 2025 data, IDIBELL has 1,582 professionals. Women represent 60% of principal investigators, 58% of clinical researchers, 67% of postdoctoral staff, and 72% of predoctoral staff, demonstrating a commitment to equal opportunities.
The Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute, established in 2004, specializes in cancer, neuroscience, translational medicine, and regenerative medicine. It comprises over 1,500 professionals and 73 research groups, publishing more than 1,400 scientific articles annually. It is supported by various healthcare and academic institutions in Catalonia.
