UPC receives funding to enhance its research infrastructure

The Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya acquires state-of-the-art equipment for research in artificial intelligence, materials science, and hydrogen.

The Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) has received €749,992 in grants from the Spanish Research Agency (AEI) to acquire state-of-the-art scientific and technical equipment. This funding will strengthen its capabilities in strategic fields such as artificial intelligence, nanoscience, hydrogen, and supercomputing.

The Barcelona Research Center in Multiscale Science and Engineering (CCEM), accredited as a María de Maeztu Unit of Excellence, will acquire a next-generation microscopy system for materials characterisation. This new high-resolution electron microscope, featuring an ion beam column, will enable three-dimensional reconstructions (3D tomography) with 5-nanometre accuracy and large-area sample analysis to identify phase and chemical composition variations.
With €160,000, the UPC's ICT Area will create the University's first institutional artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure. This GPU-accelerated computing platform will be dedicated to AI model training and inference and will be installed at the UPC's Data Processing Centre on the North Diagonal Campus in Barcelona.
The Heat and Mass Transfer Technological Centre (CTTC), located on the Terrassa Campus, will expand its high-performance computing infrastructure with ten new nodes delivering 22.5 teraFLOPS of computing capacity. This upgrade, with an investment of €70,936, will support research groups in various fields.
The Specific Centre for Hydrogen Research (CER-H2), on the Diagonal-Besòs Campus, will upgrade its electrical installation with €50,125 in funding, boosting its weather station capacity from 30 kW to 120 kW. This laboratory, first opened in November 2023, will allow testing of systems such as fuel cells and electrolysers under controlled climatic conditions, making it the highest nominal capacity facility of its kind in Spain.
These projects align with the UPC's 2025–2028 Strategic Research and Knowledge Transfer Plan, which prioritises enhancing unique, interdisciplinary infrastructures. The University currently operates 1,416 scientific and technical services and 94 research facilities.
