The transformation of Fira de Montjuïc is underway with the removal of the fibreglass roof from the Palau d'Alfons XIII and the deconstruction of the Palau de Congressos, as a new sports center is planned for Poble-sec.

The transformation of Fira de Montjuïc is becoming increasingly visible with the commencement of dismantling key elements. A large crane has been installed at the Palau d'Alfons XIII to remove its fibreglass roof, a prominent feature of the urban skyline observed from the MNAC. The work, involving operators in protective gear, is being carried out carefully and has been communicated to local residents.
Inside the Palau d'Alfons XIII, non-heritage demolition has begun, marking the start of the dismantling of this historic venue within the fairgrounds. These actions are part of the comprehensive renovation plan for the site, scheduled until 2029, aiming to restore historic spaces and update facilities.
Concurrently, the deconstruction of the Palau de Congressos is proceeding. Seating, air conditioning systems, and other components are being removed prior to the final demolition. This preliminary operation is crucial for ensuring safety and proper waste management, with the Plaça de l'Univers now cordoned off by metal fences.
On Rius i Taulet avenue, the City Council has given initial approval to the first phase of the project to convert Pavelló 2 of Fira de Montjuïc into the future Municipal Sports Center of Poble-sec. This initiative addresses a long-standing demand from the neighborhood and will focus on the interior renovation of a 3,450 square meter area.
The first phase of the sports center has a budget of approximately 3 million euros and will include two multi-purpose courts suitable for handball, basketball, futsal, and volleyball. Construction is slated to begin in September 2026, with completion expected in the spring of 2027. This new facility will host the clubs currently using the Pavelló d'Itàlia, which will subsequently be demolished.
