Metges de Catalunya has called for a 'strike of the eraser' in five Catalan hospitals, starting June 1st, limiting overtime hours to demand better working conditions.

A segment of the medical community in Catalonia has decided to join a 'strike of the eraser' starting June 1st, ceasing to perform overtime hours or 'peonadas'. The protest, driven by the union Metges de Catalunya, affects five major healthcare complexes: Bellvitge Hospital, the Consorci Sanitari Integral, Sant Joan de Déu Hospital, Josep Trueta Hospital, and Parc Taulí.
However, Catalonia's largest hospital, Vall d'Hebron, has not joined this call. Center sources have indicated that overtime activity does not play a significant role in its daily operations. This decision follows eleven previous strike days organized by the same union since last October.
The mobilization could significantly impact surgical scheduling, as it includes key specialties such as anesthesiology, resuscitation, surgery, and traumatology. In response, some hospital managements are considering increasing activity during the summer months to prevent longer waiting lists.
The medical professionals are demanding better working conditions and the establishment of a specific statute for their professional category. Nevertheless, previous strike calls have seen minority participation rates, according to data from the Department of Health of the Generalitat de Catalunya.
