In commemoration of World Mental Health Day (October 10th), a new episode of the podcast 'Un bri de ciència' has been released. The conversation features Jorge Cuevas, Head of the Adult Psychiatry Service at HUGTiP, a researcher at IGTP, and an associate professor at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.
Mental health is an essential component of daily well-being. According to the World Health Organization, in 2023, approximately one in seven people worldwide lived with a mental disorder. In Catalonia, about 11% of primary care visits are related to anxiety. Despite increasing awareness, Cuevas points out that stigma persists, particularly concerning certain disorders and psychiatric care in emergency or hospitalization settings.
The episode explores key concepts such as what is understood by mental health, when professional help should be sought, and the role of daily habits and the surrounding community. It also emphasizes the importance of collaboration among the involved healthcare professionals.
Furthermore, research projects from the Hospital Germans Trias i Pujol aimed at improving psychiatric care are presented, including the open-door hospitalization model, the review of emergency spaces, and the study of involuntary admissions and mechanical restraints.
Through this initiative, 'Un bri de ciència' continues its mission to make science and health accessible to the public, while also highlighting the collaborative work of the Hospital and the Institut de Recerca Germans Trias i Pujol.
