Illustrator Nathan Fowkes is recognized for his contribution to nearly thirty animated films, bringing unforgettable visual environments to life in titles such as Shrek, How to Train Your Dragon, The Prince of Egypt, and Rio. His work is fundamental in establishing the atmosphere and narrative context of each story.
Fowkes describes his job as translating the script into images, seeking a balance between visual beauty and the ability to move the viewer. Color, light, and composition are his primary tools for conveying feelings and accompanying the plot's development, aiming for the audience to connect deeply with the work.
Regarding artificial intelligence, Fowkes considers it a valuable tool for research and initial drafting, although he acknowledges the reluctance to publicly admit its use. He argues that, much like the lightsabers in Star Wars, AI can be powerful, but its value lies in the skill of the artist wielding it. He also highlights its potential to optimize production times, allowing creators more personal time.
The most challenging project for Fowkes was How to Train Your Dragon, due to constant changes in direction and story. In contrast, he recalls The Prince of Egypt, his first film, as a highly satisfying and formative experience, thanks to the great talent of the team involved.
In addition to his work in film and video games, Fowkes teaches at the Joso School of Drawing and Comics in Barcelona, where he shares his methods with aspiring young artists. His goal is to instill the importance of conveying emotion through art.
