Fundación La Caixa has inaugurated a new center of excellence in Barcelona, at the foot of Tibidabo, with a 100 million euro investment dedicated to studying the immune system and its relation to various diseases.

The CaixaResearch Institute, spanning 20,000 m², will host over 400 scientists focused on in-depth research into the immune system. The primary goal is to understand its connection with prevalent societal diseases, such as neurological, oncological, and infectious conditions.
The decision to name the center in English has sparked debate, despite English being the lingua franca in international scientific communication. This choice, while facilitating the attraction of global talent, raises questions about foregoing a name in the local language for institutions located in Catalonia.

"It's not about that, but about asking ourselves why we have to use an English name for an institution that will be in Barcelona."

The use of English as a basic language in many fields, including science, reflects a global trend that transcends official or native languages. However, this homogenization can lead to a loss of cultural and linguistic identity, making the world less diverse and rich in its expressions.
