This Saturday, a new zone for skateboarding was inaugurated at Parc del Maresme, located in the Sant Martí district. This provisional space, named skate-Garcia Fària, covers 3,000 m2 and transforms a section of the seafront into an authentic urban 'skate spot' through the strategic placement of furniture designed to facilitate both public use and skating practice.
The project, part of Barcelona World Capital of Architecture 2026, offers a contemporary interpretation of public space. The objective was not to create a segregated sports area, but to integrate skating activity into the urban landscape using elements that also function as benches, resting areas, and meeting points. The intervention preserves existing elements and arranges new pieces to minimize interference with regular pedestrian routes.
The development includes fourteen large-format concrete pieces manufactured by the company Escofet, a co-promoter of the initiative. These modules, designed for durability and resistance, are distributed throughout the space, creating pathways, rest areas, and new usage possibilities for both daily promenade users and the skater community. The recommended usage hours are from 8 AM to 11 PM.
This space has been promoted as a pilot project to foster coexistence and active urbanism, aligning with the Ajuntament de Barcelona's commitment to creating new spaces for skateboarding and improving coexistence between skaters and other public space users.
