With a professional background that includes the book sector and accounting, Pat Ubach, who holds degrees in art history and anthropology, makes her literary debut with her first novel. This publication places her within the catalog of Spècula, an Empordà-based publisher specializing in speculative fiction.
Prior to this milestone, the author had already been recognized with the Sexe fora de norma, sexe i humor award for her short story De prínceps i princeses (Raig Verd, 2024), and also received the XVII Helena Jubany Award for Elisenda (Associació Helena Jubany, 2024).
“"For many years, as a mother, I told them they had to do what they wanted, that they had to achieve their dreams, always with their feet on the ground, and I wasn't trying, until now."
The novel Escafandre de vidre transports the reader to a dystopian future, where an entity called Bruna, a contaminated fog, makes life difficult. The work explores themes such as organized society, the role of women, and the importance of art as a form of expression and resistance.
The author highlights her passion for science fiction and fantasy, genres that have always accompanied her since her youth. Furthermore, she emphasizes the growth of this type of literature in Catalan over the last ten years, with the emergence of imprints like Spècula, Males Herbes, and Mai Més, which have opened new opportunities for writers and readers.
The novel's title, Escafandre de vidre, refers to a symbolic object that protects women outdoors but also oppresses them, representing a metaphor for the "glass ceiling" and the difficulties they face. The work, spanning 183 pages, is priced at 19.50 euros.
