Poblenou community center cancels Carnival parade due to alcohol route ban

The L'Octubre association claims Barcelona's new regulations against 'drunk tours' are unfairly targeting local cultural events.

The L'Octubre del Poblenou community center has cancelled its traditional Carnival parade following a decree by the Barcelona City Council banning organized alcohol consumption routes in public spaces.

Organizers claim the Sant Martí district denied their permit, citing a decree introduced by Mayor Jaume Collboni. While the law was intended to curb 'drunk tourism' in the city center, local entities argue it is now being used to suppress neighborhood traditions that have existed since 2013.

"They tell us it is a political decision. We have gone from a decree against tourist businesses to banning festive parades organized by local associations."

Municipal sources state the ban applies city-wide, though they claim a license until 11:00 PM was available. The association has decided to move the celebration indoors to avoid potential fines, raising concerns about future events like the Poblenou festival in September.
