The project was made possible through collaboration with AENA, which was essential for overcoming the specific challenges and restrictions of operating within an airport infrastructure. The wells, unused for years due to management difficulties, underwent approximately two years of work at a cost of €467,810.46 (excluding VAT).
Improvements included the renovation of the electrical system, replacement of pumps, installation of necessary extraction machinery, and connection to the supply network. An agreement with AENA also facilitated access to electrical supply.
The final step before the water can be put into service is determining the appropriate treatment to eliminate PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) present in the local groundwater. Aguas de Reus anticipates that the study to identify the most effective type of activated carbon will be completed in the coming weeks.

PFAS are chemical compounds known for their persistence in the environment, used in products such as non-stick materials and firefighting foams. Since December 2023, Spanish regulations mandate specific controls for these substances in drinking water.
Concurrently, since 2025, Aguas de Reus has been participating in the PFAS-CLEARWATER research project. This initiative, supported by a consortium including the Universitat Rovira i Virgili and the Fundació Eurecat, aims to develop new solutions for removing PFAS from water.
