Currently, the Rodalies network operates with two independent control centers, located just over three kilometers apart. The Adif center at Estació de França manages infrastructure and signaling, while the Renfe center in El Clot handles trains, drivers, and passenger information. This duality has been a source of problems, especially in communication and the accuracy of information provided to users.
After numerous incidents and a long period of disconnection, both public companies have recognized the need to collaborate under one roof. This initiative is inspired by existing coordination models, such as Barcelona's emergency center, where the Mossos d'Esquadra, Guàrdia Urbana, and Bombers operate jointly.
“"We have a project underway to work jointly in an integrated center where the infrastructure administrator and the train operator are together so they can work collaboratively."
The unification of Adif's Circulation Regulation Center (CRC) and Renfe's Operations Management Center (CGO) is not a direct consequence of the creation of the mixed company Rodalies de Catalunya. In fact, the state operator plans to replicate this model in other major railway hubs in Spain, such as Madrid, where similar challenges are faced.
While full integration is being finalized, provisional measures have been implemented to improve communication. Renfe transmission figures have been stationed in an adjacent room at the Adif control center to streamline information exchange and increase response capacity. Additionally, Renfe has reinforced its control center with the incorporation of 25 new professionals over the past year, who have received specific training on Rodalies operations.
This staff reinforcement has allowed for tasks such as testing alternative road services, a practice that has proven more effective than theoretical data analysis in identifying areas for improvement. Given the positive results, Renfe has opened a new call for 48 more people, who will join the approximately 30 working per shift at the El Clot center. The goal is to end informational inconsistencies and ensure a unified message from Renfe, which currently does not always align with Adif's.
