Rodalies Train Drivers Protest in Sants Over Safety Concerns After New Landslide on the R1 Line

Workers claim that recent inspections do not guarantee the safety of the rail network or the thousands of daily commuters.

Several Rodalies train drivers spontaneously gathered at Sants station in Barcelona on January 23, 2026, to protest the lack of safety guarantees on the rail network following a new landslide on the R1 line.

The protest took place hours after a landslide forced the closure of the R1 line between Tordera (el Maresme) and Maçanet (la Selva). The railway collective argues that the resumption of service, following the fatal accident in Gelida, does not offer sufficient safety guarantees, a fact they believe is confirmed by today's incident.

"We are very scared, many colleagues are requesting sick leave, who can go to work like this? It is inadmissible. We have fear, insecurity."

Elisabet Ramos · Train Driver and CGT Representative
Ramos, also a representative of the CGT, detailed that the incident on the R1 was serious. The driver had to reduce speed from 100 km/h to 30 km/h thanks to the warning from an unprotected level crossing, thus avoiding a tragedy. She stressed that without this reduction, another victim might have been reported today.
The railway worker expressed indignation that, despite inspections and 'white marches' carried out in the previous hours, and guarantees given yesterday that 'everything was correct' for both workers and the thousands of daily Rodalies passengers, they were nearly involved in another serious accident today. “It cannot be, they tell us one thing and they are not complying,” she added.
