The Sant Pau Hospital has received accreditation as a Clinical Expertise Unit (UEC) for two specialized areas in rare ophthalmological diseases, as reported by the Catalan Health Service.

The Uveitis Functional Unit and the Retina team from Sant Pau's Ophthalmology and Rheumatology Services have earned this recognition of excellence. Uveitis, an inflammation of the eye's uvea, can be associated with systemic inflammatory diseases, infections, or other ocular pathologies, requiring a multidisciplinary approach that Sant Pau offers through its Functional Unit.
The Uveitis Unit is coordinated by doctors Ignacio Vela and Jesús Díaz from the Ophthalmology Service, and by Dr. Patricia Moya from the Rheumatology Service. Meanwhile, the Retina team, specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions such as retinal dystrophies or diabetic retinopathy, comprises the medical staff Marta Caminal, Luciene Collet, Jaume Crespi, Jesús Díaz, Ignacio Salvador, and Ignacio Vela, along with the Service's optometry team.
Both specialties are part of the Sant Pau Rare Diseases Program, a model that promotes a multidisciplinary approach through Functional Units to ensure coordinated and transversal care for patients.
