The metropolitan area of Barcelona woke up this morning to a strong smell of burning caused by smoke from industrial fires reported in Sabadell, Granollers, and Hostalets de Pierola.

The Generalitat Fire Department reported that the most significant fire started at 4:57 AM at a landfill in Granollers, located near the C-35 road. The land breeze carried the black smoke along the Congost and Besòs valleys toward the coast.
By 10:00 AM, the emergency response team had 12 units working to contain the burning waste and scrap metal. Extinguishing efforts, which include heavy machinery, are expected to be long-term to prevent the flames from spreading throughout the facility.
Due to the smoke plume, Civil Protection has activated the Procicat plan pre-alert. The agency has issued confinement recommendations for populations affected by the air quality.
