A sinkhole caused by the R2 tunnel works between Barcelona and Montcada i Reixac has led to a significant disruption in rail traffic. The incident, which did not result in any injuries, has necessitated the implementation of an alternative transport plan to ensure the mobility of affected passengers.
The R2, R2 Nord, and R11 lines have been suspended indefinitely between Montcada i Reixac and Sant Andreu. Renfe has established an alternative operation involving walking transfers and bus services to connect various lines and destinations, including the airport, Castelldefels, Manresa, and Girona.
Passengers have voiced their frustration over the disruptions and delays. At Granollers Centre station, some travelers described the situation as a daily occurrence with Renfe, expressing concern about arriving late for work.
The incident occurred yesterday afternoon when a connection pit for the R2 tunnel works, located in the Vallbona neighborhood (Nou Barris), collapsed on one side. The sinkhole swallowed a crane and other heavy machinery. The Barcelona Fire Department assessed the safety of the area and recommended continuous monitoring with sensors in the coming days.
Arturo Pastor, deputy director of construction for Adif, stated that efforts were focused on filling the cavity with concrete to stabilize it. Pastor admitted that the exact size of the hole is still unknown and confirmed that nearby homes have not sustained any cracks.
