From early morning, striking teachers have initiated mobilizations that have led to the blocking of several access points to Barcelona and major traffic arteries. This protest marks the beginning of a new cycle of strikes called by the unions USTEC, Professors de Secundària, CGT, and Intersindical, which include a stoppage of schools and institutes throughout Catalonia.
The first blockade was reported shortly before seven in the morning on the Ronda de Dalt, at the height of Santa Coloma de Gramenet, near the Trinitat junction. Subsequently, the same road was blocked at Mundet, which was lifted before eight. A hundred teachers also blocked the Gran Via at the height of La Campana, near Plaça d'Ildefons Cerdà, a crucial point for vehicle entry and exit from the city, where about 200 people are still gathered.
In addition to the blockades in the capital, other access roads to Barcelona have been blocked, such as the C-32 in Mataró. A slow march of teachers on the C-55 towards Barcelona has also been reported, and the C-17 is blocked at Malla.
These traffic blockades precede a unitary demonstration called for 12:00 PM in Plaça d'Urquinaona, which will head towards the Palau de la Generalitat, in Plaça de Sant Jaume. The march will be preceded by two columns advancing towards the city center from Plaça d'Espanya and El Clot station starting at 10:30 AM.
The majority education unions have called a total of 17 strike days until June 5, coinciding with the end of the 2025-2026 school year. The stoppages aim to force the Department of Education to negotiate labor improvements and classroom conditions, beyond the agreement signed by the government with CCOO and UGT. The Minister of Education, Esther Niubó, has called a meeting of the sectoral table for this Thursday, expressing her willingness to resolve the situation.
