With the arrival of summer, Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) has launched an ambitious works program to improve the metro network. TMB president Laia Bonet explained that the typical summer decrease in passengers will be used to carry out "inevitable" actions aimed at increasing user comfort and reducing vibrations and noise. Bonet emphasized that service closures are "the only way to do it as quickly as possible".
Line L1 will be one of the most affected, with the section between Florida and Plaça de Sants out of service from July 17 to August 28. This comprehensive track renovation, with a budget of 11.5 million euros, includes the modernization of railway equipment in Santa Eulàlia. This section registers an average of 43,000 daily validations in July and 36,000 in August. TMB will provide a special bus service and enhance user information, also recommending the use of Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC). Additionally, line L5 will maintain its school-year service levels for the first three weeks of July to accommodate airport-bound tourists.
Lines L9 and L10 Nord will also experience significant closures. The section between La Sagrera and Onze de Setembre will be affected from June 25 to August 30 due to works on the Sagrera macropou, extending to Bon Pastor from August 31 to September 6. These works, promoted by the Generalitat with a budget of 22.6 million euros, adapt the macropou for the future service entry of the line's central section. Alternatives include regular bus lines H8, 34, and 126, as well as a replacement bus service. Mobility Secretary Manel Nadal highlighted the government's continued investment in this infrastructure.
The Verdaguer station on line L4 will be closed from July 6 to August 30 for accessibility works connecting to L5. Although trains will pass through without stopping, the works, budgeted at 8.6 million euros, include the installation of new elevators, escalators, and ramps to improve accessibility. This phase has been brought forward to avoid concentrating mobility issues during the Tour de France.
Finally, the connecting corridor between lines L1 and L3 at Catalunya station will undergo renovation from July 6 to September 7. This project, which includes asbestos removal with a budget of 1.2 million euros, will require passengers to transfer via street level, following specific signage. Laia Bonet assured that the presence of asbestos poses "no risk" to passengers.
