This move intensifies the ongoing conflict with Salvador Illa's administration. According to the union, the signatures represent over 58% of the public education workforce. They have also requested a formal debate within the Parliament's Petitions Committee.
“"The Government cannot ignore this majority outcry from the public education sector, which represents the broadest support such an initiative has ever seen."
Support is particularly strong in major urban areas, reaching 70% in Barcelona and 72% in Manresa. With Minister Niubó currently on medical leave, union leaders are set to meet with General Secretary Teresa Sambola after Illa declined a personal meeting due to schedule complexities.
While negotiations are set to resume next Monday, the sector is preparing for a week of protests starting March 16. This will culminate in a general strike across Catalonia on March 20, featuring a major demonstration in the capital.
