The Rodalies service in Catalonia remains suspended today Thursday following the Gelida accident, as the Semaf union demands safety guarantees for engineers before resuming circulation.

The Railway Accident Investigation Commission (CIAF) has opened a file to investigate the causes of the Gelida accident last Tuesday, classifying the incident as “Serious”. The crash resulted in the death of a trainee engineer, five serious injuries, and 36 minor injuries, after the train collided with a retaining wall that collapsed.

"We never showed the intention to reopen: it is not a whim, we need safety guarantees."

Diego Martín · Semaf General Secretary
The majority engineers' union, Semaf, has called a general strike for February 9, 10, and 11, 2026, demanding greater network safety, claiming that hundreds of incidents reported to Adif receive no response. Union representatives are meeting with Renfe, Adif, and the Generalitat to discuss the service reopening.
The total paralysis of the service has affected approximately 400,000 daily travelers, causing an 85% increase in traffic on the C-32 in Garraf and significant congestion on the A-2 and Barcelona ring roads. The Barcelona City Council has deployed about twenty agents to guide users at the city's main stations.
