The Spanish Police, in collaboration with Brazilian authorities, has dismantled a criminal organization dedicated to air-based cocaine export between Brazil and Barcelona, resulting in five key arrests.

The operation, which concluded on April 17, 2026, has led to the dismantling of a transnational network that used Sao Paulo-Guarulhos and El Prat airports to smuggle large quantities of drugs. Five arrests were made: four in Catalonia and one in Brazil.
Among those arrested in Catalonia are three employees of El Prat airport and a businessman from Baix Llobregat, identified as the network's coordinator. They face charges of belonging to a criminal organization, drug trafficking, and illegal possession of weapons.
The investigation began in late November 2025, following the arrest of the three El Prat workers who attempted to smuggle 162 kilograms of cocaine in three suitcases, bypassing regular controls. This led to collaboration with the Sao Paulo Federal Police to trace the drug's origin.
Brazilian authorities identified an airport employee who used a service vehicle to transport drug packages directly to planes bound for Barcelona. This individual was arrested, and a pistol with a defaced serial number was confiscated.
The individuals arrested in Barcelona, with over a decade of service and positions of responsibility in ground assistance, exploited their privileged access to divert suitcases containing drugs. The substance was then handed over to a second worker for removal from the airport and, finally, to a third off-duty member for distribution.
In the final phase of the operation, the Baix Llobregat businessman, who coordinated the El Prat workers and maintained contacts with suppliers, was identified and arrested. During the search, over 39,000 euros in cash, four simulated war weapons, a high-displacement vehicle, 268 grams of MDMA, and an indoor marijuana plantation were seized.

"With this operation, the criminal cell responsible for extracting drugs by air between the two countries has been completely dismantled. A significant channel for the entry of narcotics into the country has been eradicated."
