Born in 1837 and passed away in 1906, Bordas i Estragués was one of the great promoters of theatre during the Catalan Renaixença, although his prominence did not reach that of figures like Frederic Soler Pitarra or Àngel Guimerà. His academic career led him to graduate in philosophy and literature from the University of Barcelona.
In 1872, he obtained a position as a Latin and rhetoric professor at the institute of Ibiza, where he met his wife, Trinitat de la Cuesta. The couple had four children, among them, Josep Bordas de la Cuesta, who would later become mayor of Castelló on three occasions during the first third of the 20th century. In addition to his teaching work, Ramon Bordas i Estragués presided over the Certamen de l'Associació Literària.
His prolific dramatic work makes him the most outstanding playwright from Castelló in this field. He wrote a total of twenty-two texts, nineteen of which premiered at the Teatre Romea in Barcelona. This theatre, in the late 19th century, was a benchmark for the petty bourgeoisie and popular classes, a true temple of Catalan theatre of the era, where works of Renaixença dramatic tradition were performed.
“"Do not be surprised, then, that I speak to you in Catalan; because, although the official language of the association is not Catalan, as I believe it should be, the celebration we are holding is nevertheless essentially Catalan in origin..."
His love for his land and the Catalan language is reflected in the speech he delivered in 1889 at the Girona Literary Contest, where he defended the use of Catalan despite it not being the official language of the association. In addition to his theatrical production, he published a book of poems and, in 1888, a collection of ten works under the title Teatro Català. Obras Dramáticas.
