A high-speed police chase in Barcelona's Poblenou neighborhood ended this Sunday morning with a tragic accident that caused two deaths and one critical injury.

The incident occurred around nine in the morning at the intersection of Pallars and Fluvià streets, in the Sant Martí district. According to eyewitnesses, a loud noise alerted residents to the event. The vehicle attempting to escape from the Mossos d’Esquadra was traveling in the wrong direction on Pallars street when it collided head-on with another car waiting at the traffic light.
A man and a woman were traveling in the second involved vehicle. Both had to be rescued by emergency services, who quickly arrived at the scene. The woman was evacuated alive to a hospital with critical prognosis, while both drivers were found deceased at the accident site.
The Mossos d’Esquadra explained that they received a tip from a hotel reporting a vehicle with French plates making erratic maneuvers, and that according to the tip, the driver "was drugged." After the pursuit began, the fleeing driver attempted to escape at high speed, leading to the fatal accident.
With these two victims, the total number of people killed in traffic accidents in Barcelona this year now stands at eight.
