During work at the Abaceria Market, located in the Vila de Gràcia neighborhood, operators discovered the access to an unfinished Civil War air-raid shelter dating back to 1937. The bunker, with a gallery-type structure, preserves a section approximately 68 meters long, 1.10 meters wide, and 2 meters high.
Inside, several elements have been preserved, such as a ventilation shaft and iron hooks, suggesting the possible placement of ancient lighting systems, like oil or fuel lamps. These elements provide valuable information about the space's operating conditions during the conflict.
Archaeological excavations indicate it is likely a section of shelter number 230, registered in the historical documentation of Barcelona's Local Board of Passive Defense. This shelter appeared in lists from December 1937 as under construction, funded by public subsidy, and with a planned capacity for 240 people.
Municipal documentation from 1939-1940 describes a structure nearly 199 meters long, unlined, with characteristics compatible with the section found on Torrijos street, near the market. Some years ago, another bunker was documented in the area, possibly identifiable with shelters 1195 or 0008.
The City Council has reported that, as it is an unfinished shelter with eroded clay in some areas, the space will be sealed once fully documented. Access will be through a register for future technical inspections.
