This initiative, which began a year ago with the publication of the collective work El dret a la llengua, seeks to assert the demands of the DUDL and generate a debate for its expansion. The official presentation of the update project took place last Wednesday, April 15, at the headquarters of the Institut d'Estudis Catalans, before some seventy representatives of various entities.
The main objective is to strengthen the effective protection of linguistic rights globally and place them at the center of democratic, cultural, and human rights agendas. The project has the support of a wide network of entities and institutions and has been conceived as an international, participatory, and open process.
The update of the DUDL aims to address emerging challenges such as accelerated digitalization, the impact of artificial intelligence, international migration, armed conflicts, and linguistic minoritization processes. It will also cover crucial aspects such as linguistic rights in digital and educational environments, as well as protection against forced assimilation.
The project will unfold in several phases until 2028, with the ultimate goal of presenting the new Declaration before the human rights bodies of the United Nations. Starting from April 15, 2026, institutions, experts, and entities from around the world will be able to submit their contributions to the drafting of the new text.
