Veolia has positioned itself as the leading candidate to win the major contract for drinking water management in the Barcelona Metropolitan Area (AMB). The company has achieved the highest technical score and submitted the most favorable economic bid for a contract valued at over 1 billion euros.
This agreement, set to last for 25 years, will supply drinking water to an estimated population of approximately 250,000 inhabitants across eight metropolitan municipalities: Sant Cugat del Vallès, Cervelló, Corbera de Llobregat, la Palma de Cervelló, Tiana, Sant Andreu de la Barca, Molins de Rei, and Ripollet.
Although prospects point to Veolia as the awardee, the tender still needs to complete the necessary administrative procedures. According to AMB sources, the metropolitan council is scheduled to ratify the decision in September.
The expectation is that the awarded company could begin managing water services by the end of 2026. One of the initial conditions set by the AMB is the freezing of tariffs during the first year of the concession, thereby facilitating the new operator's integration and detailed planning of future actions.
