The municipality's accession was formalized this Monday, June 1st, in an event attended by the Minister of Linguistic Policy, Francesc Xavier Vila. The mayor of Vilanova, Juan Luis Ruiz, emphasized that the signing represents the commitment of the entire city to the defense of the Catalan language.
The mayor highlighted the work of the Department of Culture and Language, the collaboration with the Consorci per a la Normalització Lingüística (Consortium for Linguistic Normalization), and joint initiatives with the city's commercial and business sector to promote the use of Catalan in public services and establishment signage. "We reaffirm this commitment as a city and continue working to ensure Catalan remains a living, present, and useful language in all social interaction spaces," he concluded.
Minister Vila emphasized the importance of municipal involvement in linguistic policy, stating that "we cannot implement effective linguistic policies without the full involvement of local authorities." During his visit, the minister also signed the city's book of honor and held a working meeting with the municipal government to discuss action plans and local projects for promoting Catalan.
Subsequently, the minister traveled to Masia d'en Cabanyes to attend the conference 'Promoting Catalan through Municipalities: 40 Proposals for Action,' organized by the Department of Linguistic Policy. This meeting brought together mayors, councilors, and linguistic policy officials from the Penedès region to share tools and resources for strengthening Catalan's presence in the daily lives of municipalities.
Recently, on the occasion of the pact's first anniversary (signed on May 13, 2025), the Government presented a positive assessment, indicating that 35% of the proposed measures have been completed, 61% are in progress, and only 4% are in an initial phase.
