Xavier Antich will continue at the helm of Òmnium Cultural for another four years. The ordinary general assembly, held at the Casino l’Aliança del Poblenou in Barcelona, ratified the sole candidacy presented to renew the entity's board of directors. Antich, who has presided over Òmnium since February 2022, had announced his intention to run for re-election on April 10.
As there was no alternative candidacy, members had the option to support the list or vote blank. The electronic voting period opened on May 5, and in-person voting took place today, coinciding with the assembly. In the same session, the entity also presented its work plan and budget for the year.
The candidacy led by Antich, a doctor of philosophy, writer, and university professor, presented itself as a continuation of the project initiated in 2022 with three central pillars: language, culture, and social cohesion, aiming to advance towards independence. Key priorities include strengthening Catalan language use, promoting culture, defending civil and political rights, and fostering social cohesion in a diverse society. Antich particularly emphasized the need to reinforce consensus on the Catalan school model, in anticipation of a potential ruling by the Spanish Constitutional Court that could affect it.
The process has renewed the presidency, vice-presidencies, treasury, and some board positions. The candidacy incorporates new faces, including lawyer and former deputy Magda Oranich, lawyer and journalist Jordi Cabré, and journalist and former member of the Spanish congress Marta Rosique. Also joining are Mariona Lladonosa, Elena Subirà, Antònia Maria Dols, Íngrid March, Tayssir Azouz, and Ernest Montserrat.
Among those returning to the list are journalist and activist David Fernàndez, industrial engineer Teresa Navarro, and jurist and afrofeminist activist Susan Kalunge.
With this re-election, Antich will continue in office until 2030. Òmnium has not had elections with more than one list since 2002, when Jordi Porta defeated Josep Espar Ticó and Josep Vergés. Since then, Muriel Casals, Quim Torra, Jordi Cuixart, and Xavier Antich have succeeded each other as president without any alternative candidacies.
