Bac de Roda bridge during maintenance works in Barcelona.

Maintenance and structural improvement works on Barcelona's Bac de Roda bridge began this week, with an estimated duration of six months and a budget of 2.1 million euros.

The maintenance and improvement operations on the Bac de Roda bridge, which connects the Sant Andreu and Sant Martí districts over the railway lines, include the repair and sanitation of concrete and steel elements, protective repainting, pavement renewal, and enhancements to safety and accessibility. These works are part of the Pla Endreça initiative by the Barcelona City Council.
The intervention will involve cleaning, repairing, and treating deficiencies found in the concrete and steel structure, drainage systems, pavement, ornamental elements, and street furniture. The work will be phased to maintain pedestrian, bicycle, and vehicle circulation while minimizing disruptions.

"With this action, we are not only improving a key infrastructure for the city but also ensuring its durability, safety, and accessibility so it can continue serving the people who use it. Its rehabilitation is also another piece in the transformation of the Sagrera area, which is better connecting the Sant Andreu and Sant Martí districts."

Marta Villanueva · Councillor for Sant Andreu
The bridge, designed by Santiago Calatrava and built in 1987, connects Felip II and Bac de Roda streets. The first phase of works will focus on repairing damage to concrete and steel, anti-corrosion treatments, cleaning and replacing drainage systems, as well as repairing pavements and street furniture.
Subsequently, a general repainting of the bridge will be carried out, along with a permanent anti-graffiti treatment up to 3 meters high. Safety and accessibility improvements will also be implemented, including pavement renewal, anti-slip elements on stairs, protective mesh on railings, and cleaning of lighting and ornamental features.
The work plan includes maintaining at least one lane open for vehicle traffic and providing signage for pedestrian and cyclist diversions. Occasional interventions on the underside of the deck over the railway lines will take place during nighttime hours.
This project is part of the Comprehensive Maintenance Plan (PMI), integrated within the Pla Endreça, which allocates a total investment of €16.5 million for road structures between 2026 and 2027, in addition to other works on historic bridges.
