Berga experiences unusual Carnival with two parades and a group rebellion

The cancellation of Saturday's parade due to wind led to a spontaneous protest and a diminished official event on Sunday.

The city of Berga concluded an atypical Carnival this February 2026, characterized by division after high wind warnings forced the Berga Town Council to cancel Saturday's official parade.

The municipal decision triggered an immediate reaction from local groups. Using mobile messaging, over half of the registered groups organized an unofficial parade. Despite warnings from the council, many floats gathered at the Valldan industrial estate and eventually marched through Carrer del Roser once the Generalitat lowered the weather alert level.
This 'rebellion' left Sunday's official event significantly smaller. Only 9 out of the 24 original groups participated. Many cited a lack of personnel or dissatisfaction with the council's decisions as reasons for their absence, leading to a shortened route along Passeig de la Pau.
Regarding the awards, the float The Guardians of Light took the top prize of 1,000 euros. Other winners included the 'amanitas' and the 'mustache' groups, although several categories remained vacant due to the low turnout on Sunday.
