The mayors, representing all municipal councils in the region, sought to make their support for the agricultural sector visible. The visit was intentionally discreet to avoid overshadowing the farmers and ranchers who have maintained the concentration and road closure on the C-16, in the municipality of Olvan, since Thursday.
“"The sector's weight in the region is very important, and the fact that we are here today is our way of reflecting that we are part of this demand and that we support the country's agriculture."
Sebastià Prat, the Mayor of Olvan and also a farmer, stressed that the Mercosur agreement affects “the way we understand our food system,” as it would allow the entry of products that do not meet the quality standards required by the European framework.
Meanwhile, the Mayor of Gironella, David Font, emphasized the role of administrations if the agreement is finally signed. Font called for ensuring that imported products meet the same standards and for promoting, or even mandating, local consumption in public facilities like school cafeterias, hospitals, and residences.
