The municipality of Gironella inaugurated on Thursday a new 600-meter section of the Via del Carrilet, connecting the Cal Bassacs industrial estate with Viladomiu Nou, recovering a historic space for safe mobility.

The new route, approximately 600 meters long and 2.10 meters wide, provides continuity to existing sections, finally linking Cal Bassacs (from the Camp dels Pals industrial estate) with Viladomiu Nou. It has been equipped with low-consumption LED lighting, rest areas with benches, and climate-adapted trees.

"The route where the Carrilet passed, which we lost more than 50 years ago, we are now recovering for all of us. We wanted to do it with a project that recovered this essence and that everyone could enjoy in a safe and healthy way"

David Font · Mayor of Gironella
The project had a total cost of 563,534 euros. The Diputació de Barcelona (Barcelona Provincial Council) covered 74% of the total cost and the project drafting, while the Gironella City Council financed the remaining 26%. The inauguration was attended by Deputy Sergi Vallès and Mayor David Font.

"This is a unique itinerary, designed for mobility on foot and by bicycle between the center of Gironella and the Viladomiu Vell and Nou colonies. This project combines the desire of the Gironella City Council and our commitment -from the Provincial Council- to create itineraries"

Sergi Vallès · Delegate President of the Infrastructure and Territory Area of the Diputació de Barcelona
The design of the section was inspired by the old railway world, using elements that evoke the Carrilet, such as the presence of ballast gravel and the design of the luminaires, as explained by Valentí Aceña, Manager of Road Infrastructure and Mobility Services. Since 2022, Gironella has completed several sections, and a fourth phase leading to the southern roundabout of the town center is still pending.
