The significant snow depths still present at medium and high altitudes on the ski slopes are encouraging winter sports enthusiasts to prolong the season. The Masella resort, in Cerdanya, has recorded daily attendances of over 2,000 people after the Easter holidays.
“"It's a privilege to still be able to ski at this time of year, with the amount of snow we've had. Not coming to ski would be a sin."
The resort plans to remain operational until April 19th, and does not rule out the possibility of extending the season until May 3rd. For cross-country skiing, Tuixent-La Vansa will remain open until this Sunday.
Masella describes the season as «exceptional», highlighting the consistent snowfall throughout the winter months. Ramon Boter, the resort's communications manager, notes that these precipitations have created a «pull effect» among skiers, leading to attendances of over 8,000 people in a single day, especially during January and February weekends. Currently, medium and high altitudes still retain snow depths exceeding one meter, reaching up to two meters at the summit of Tosa d'Alp.
Boter explains that the resort's location, less than two hours from Barcelona and close to other metropolitan capitals, means many users are day skiers. He also emphasizes the orientation of the slopes, with 90% facing north and 80% within wooded areas, factors that contribute to «extending spring skiing». After Easter, Masella is the only ski resort open in the Catalan Pyrenees.
Skier Andreu Soldevila adds that, from an altitude of 1,900-2,000 meters, skiing conditions are «very good», considering it exceptional and the «best season» he remembers. Meanwhile, Jessie Sun, from Barcelona, has decided to continue skiing «until they close», while Claude Bonnet, a resident of La Guingueta d'Ix, in Alta Cerdanya, highlights the large amount of snow and the many open slopes at Masella.
