The demand was made public during the 2nd Congress of Campsites of Catalonia, held in La Seu d'Urgell (Alt Urgell) this Thursday. Gotanegra expressed the need to know the exact dates for the implementation of these systems, which he considers crucial for the safety of the sector.
“"President Illa said that this would be done almost as an urgent matter, and we are waiting and wishing to be able to attend the laying of the first stone of these radars."
The main objective of these radars is to refine meteorological predictions and provide an effective preventive tool against potential flood risks. Gotanegra emphasized that the Catalan camping sector is prepared to manage these risks, having self-protection plans and specific training.
The three radars, which will be installed in La Peülla and Pic de l'Orri in Pallars Sobirà, and a third in Tosa d'Alp (between Cerdanya and Berguedà), will form part of an early warning system. These systems will use data from the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) and the Catalan Meteorological Service (Meteocat) for rainfall and river flows. Meteocat estimates that prediction will improve by 90% in the Pyrenees, one of the most vulnerable areas.
In addition to flood prevention, the radars will also be useful for snow forecasts and will have applications in various sectors of the mountain regions, extending beyond campsites.
In parallel, the Catalan Campsite Federation, in collaboration with the Department of Interior, is promoting a project to enhance security in these facilities. The initiative aims for security forces to gain in-depth knowledge of these establishments, with visits and training for risk management teams. A pilot test is planned for this summer at a campsite on the Costa Brava, with the goal of extending the project throughout Catalonia within a couple of years.
