The activation of the special emergency plan for snowfall in Catalonia (NEUCAT) occurs due to the possibility of significant accumulations, especially in Val d’Aran, the north of Pallars Sobirà, Alta Ribagorça, and Cerdanya, the westernmost areas of the mountain range.
According to the SMC, the snow line will be around 800 meters, with depths potentially exceeding 10 centimeters at these altitudes. Furthermore, the meteorological episode will be accompanied by blizzards (torb), a factor that can drastically reduce visibility and complicate mobility in mountain areas.
Civil Protection requests extreme caution when traveling and advises avoiding unnecessary mobility while adverse conditions persist.
The Catalonia Operational Coordination Center (CECAT) is monitoring the evolution of the episode. The Catalan Traffic Service has confirmed that snow already affects about forty Catalan roads. In the Lleida demarcation, 23 roads require the mandatory use of chains, including the closure of the C-28 in Naut Aran due to avalanche risk. In Girona, 12 roads are affected, and in Barcelona, the BV-4024 remains closed due to wind and snow.
In parallel, Civil Protection maintains the pre-alert for the VENTCAT Plan due to wind gusts exceeding 25 m/s in the Pyrenees, Pre-Pyrenees, and Ponent. The pre-alert for the ALLAUCAT Plan (Avalanche Plan) is also maintained for HIGH danger (level 4) in Val d’Aran and the Northern Strip of Pallars Sobirà, due to the combination of intense snowfall and strong wind increasing the risk of slab and fresh snow avalanches.
