This award, one of the most significant granted by the Generalitat, has been bestowed upon a total of 20 individuals and 10 entities this year, at the proposal of the Minister of Culture, Sònia Hernández. Other notable recipients include personalities such as Victòria Camps, Maite Carranza, Joan Fontcuberta, Sílvia Munt, Julia Otero, Fermí Puig, and the University of Barcelona.
The distinction for the Coral Capella Santa Maria follows a campaign launched by the Institut d'Estudis Ceretans in 2025, which sought the award to celebrate the choir's 50 years of musical history and its significant contribution to the culture of Cerdanya.
With over five centuries of history, the Capella de Santa Maria is an emblematic institution in Puigcerdà, dedicated to choral singing. Its main activities take place in Cerdanya, fostering exchanges and encounters with other choirs from Catalonia and southern France, highlighting the high musical standard of the region. The first historical reference to a singing chapel in Santa Maria de Puigcerdà dates back to April 16, 1454, recognizing Arnald Portell as choirmaster and organist.
In October 2022, the choir celebrated the 25th anniversary of its re-establishment with a tribute party at the Casino Ceretà, bringing together choirs from across Cerdanya, municipal authorities, and former and current directors and singers. The Coral Capella de Santa Maria has become a benchmark for choral music in the region and a worthy ambassador for these Pyrenean lands.
Over the past twenty-five years, the Capella de Santa Maria has had five musical directors. Salvador de Montellà was the first, followed by Bernard Canredon, who introduced works such as Gabriel Fauré's Cantique de Jean Racine. Subsequently, Diana Gonzalez and Daniel Martin contributed their expertise, and since 2010, Carme Baulenas has led the choir, consolidating the training of its singers and providing stability to its musical endeavors.
