The volunteer firefighters of Puigcerdà concluded 165 years of service this Sunday in the capital of Cerdanya, as the station prepares to become a fully professional unit.

The farewell ceremony, held on the patron saint's day, was marked by emotional tributes from colleagues and local authorities. The decision to step down was made collectively by the local volunteers to facilitate the transition to a professional Type B station starting April 1st.

"The decision to stop was taken by the group of firefighters in Puigcerdà; it was by no means a decision from the General Directorate."

Quim Arenas · Station Chief
The new professional model will ensure a minimum of five staff members per shift. This change aims to standardize emergency coverage across Catalonia and improve response times in a region that experiences massive population growth during Christmas and Easter holidays.
